5 Tips for Designing Your New Custom Home

Have you been dreaming about creating a custom home for yourself? You may be tired of moving places that aren't the perfect fit. Maybe you don't like the way the kitchen counters are or how the home flows from one room to the next. That makes sense since your home is where you spend a lot of your time – you want it to be perfect for you!

So where can you start with your custom home design? We've got a few tips for you!

Winston House Plan

1) Start Simple

You should start mapping out your house plan with just a simple pencil and a piece of paper. Draw each room how you want it to look! Where do you want your cabinets? Your counters? You should also draw out your entire house layout in regards to where each room is and how big you are thinking you want them. Once everything is out of your head and onto a piece of paper, it's easier to show a design and building company for them to get building your custom home!

2) Plan for the Future

When thinking about building your future home, you want to take into account where you think you'll be in five or 10 years. Will you have more kids? Are you going to want an office room to work from home in? How about a gym? You want to think toward the future to build accordingly.

3) Build Sustainably

America is ranked as the 42nd most sustainable country by the United Nations. So what can you do to help that? By thinking about our environment when it comes to building custom homes, we can each do our own part with being more sustainable and living a more environmentally-friendly life. Consider installing solar panels to reduce your energy emissions. You can also consider using building materials that are recycled or made from sustainable materials.

4) Focus on Your Outdoor Living Space

One thing you don't want to miss when building your dream home is incorporating your outdoor living space into the house plan. Think about what you want to use the outdoor area for. Do you want a large yard, or do you want a smaller yard with a kitchen area and a fire pit? Do you want to entertain outside? All of these questions will help you design your outdoor space accordingly.

5) Prioritize the Features You Want

Building a house could go many different ways, but depending on what you want, you can prioritize what matters to you. Maybe your dream has been to have a large wooden farmhouse table in the middle of your dining room. If that's the case, you may want to forego the kitchen island to save room for the table you've always wanted.
